And we're back!

Christmas is over, the new year's resolutions have been broken, and Neighbours is back on TV. Welcome to 2014.

As promised, we kept the site jam-packed with awesome content over the festive break, including interviews with top developers, expert advice for new gadget owners, and - of course - our Game of the Year awards.

Check out what we've been up to over the last few weeks in our digest below.

We picked our favourite games of the year DEVICE 6

The end of the year is a time for reflection. A time to look back over the last 12 months and remember the good times. The big events. The most awesome games.

We kicked off with the best iOS games of 2013, which featured the likes of censorship saga Blackbar and viking adventure Icebreaker. And we chose the top 10 Android games, which included Ridiculous Fishing and The Room.

We love handhelds, too. The greatest 3DS games of the year included Fire Emblem: Awakening, the new Pokemon, and the utterly wonderful Animal Crossing: New Leaf. And on Vita, we loved games like Tearaway, Spelunky, and Guacamelee!

But, when that's all said and done, there's only one year-end list that really matters, isn't there?

That's right: our rundown of the most beautiful App Store icons from the last year. Look at those beauties.

We looked ahead to 2014 Smash Bros

Okay, so the end of the year may be a time for reflection. But it's also a cracking opportunity to look ahead and see what's heading our way during our next orbit around the sun.

On mobile, we picked out not 10, not 20, not 17,000, but 50 incoming iOS and Android games. These include intriguing Escher-inspired adventure Monument Valley, comic panel arrange-'em-up Framed, pop-up paper puzzler Tengami, and approximately 47 others.

We also looked forward to the next year of 3DS games (including Smash Bros., Treasurenauts, and Shantae) and the next 12 months of Vita titles (which features such treats as Metrico and Hohokum).

We talked to some important people Simogo

We finished off the year by interviewing the developers behind some of our favourite iOS games of 2013.

We chatted to Simon Flesser (the 'Simo' in Simogo) about Year Walk and DEVICE 6, and then got sidetracked and just started talking about CiNG games like Another Code and Hotel Dusk.

We also chatted to Barry Meade of Fireproof about making much-anticipated sequel The Room 2 and whether the rumours of the death of paid games have been greatly exaggerated.

The first games of 2014 came out Detective Grimoire

We got a nice break from the unrelenting fire hose of mobile games over Christmas, but the endless rush of new games started anew on January 1st. Oh, well, back to work.

This first batch of new games includes bonkers racer Jet Car Stunts 2, slick physics-puzzler Feed Me Oil 2, and nifty cartoon whodunit Detective Grimoire. See the lot of them in our best of iOS round-up for the week.

We also had a crack at Sega and Sumo Digital showdown Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. This madcap kart racer - in which Ulala is pitted against Ryo against the dude from Crazy Taxi against, erm, Wreck-It Ralph - raced away with a Gold Award.

We offered some expert tips for new iOS and Android owners iPhone 5C

Did you get your first iPad for Christmas? Or maybe you jumped ship from iOS to Android? Whatever the case, we've got some very useful advice for new gizmo owners.

On iPad, we'll teach you how to disable in-app purchases, avoid scam apps, and be the next Let's Play superstar on YouTube. On iPhone, we've got info about iCloud, sending files to friends, and finding free games.

And if you just got an Android device, we'll tell you how to change the launcher, get new widgets, close apps, take screenshots, and ask Mr Google for a refund for a crappy app.

Around Steel Media

This week at 148Apps was all about the end-of-2013 wrAPP-Ups. Everything from the best-of-the-best apps to an analysis of why Candy Crush became such a phenomenon is in this round-up piece.

Check it out while you're still trying to remember to write '2014' instead of '2013
'.
