How many times has a blacksmith saved your butt in a fantasy RPG?

I bet you can't even begin to count the number of times.

Well, now YOU can play the role of the metalsmith hero. That's right: you can play the role of blacksmith in an Android game suitably entitled Blacksmith.

Life as a blacksmith is spent hammering anvils and managing resources. These are two activities just ripe for a video game.

Black and blue

In Blacksmith, you have 108 days to try your hand at becoming a highly successful smith. As you no doubt expected, things start off pretty desperately.

You are poor and only have a few bits of wood, stone, and bronze to your name. You'll have to craft a few measly swords and arrows out of these just to build up your cash reserve.

Once you've crafted those, you can spend your well-earned cash on purchasing more resources. How? By going to the market and shopping around for the best deal.

This process continues until you've made enough money to purchase your first decent skill (the first of which enables you to upgrade the weapons you craft so they sell for more with no loss of resources).

Blacksmith

The catch is that upgrading a weapon can cause it to break, which means you've just lost the materials you used to craft it on the anvil. It's a risky game to play, but you have no choice.

Presuming you're able to 'play the blacksmith game' successfully and boost your bank balance, you'll be able to buy further skill upgrades to enhance your tools, use better resources, and craft more impressive types of weapons.

If you want to see how you fare as a smith, you can grab Blacksmith for free over on Google Play right now.
