The Blackberry PlayBook has had a tough time recently. After months of poor sales, RIM decided to slash the price of its tablet from £399 to £249 ($499 to $299 US).

If that wasn’t enough of an incentive to give the ailing slate a whirl, an industrious member of the CrackBerry forums has come up with a way to put the power of Nintendo’s NES onto the PlayBook.

The FCEUX emulator allows PlayBook owners to run almost any NES ROM available, transforming their futuristic touchscreen into a retro gaming library.

Blast from the past

As always with unofficial emulators, the legality of the program is suspect at best. You will also need to side-load the program onto your PlayBook, so those unfamiliar with the finer points of the QNX OS are going to have difficulty getting the emu up and running.

Just to prove we aren’t blowing smoke, the video below shows a Blackberry PlayBook running Super Mario Bros., with Duck Hunt also visible on the loading screen.
