iPhone 4 prices: the tariffs compared - UPDATED

This morning, iPhone 4s were loaded onto delivery vans to start their journey into the world of things. Soon, people other than Gizmodo will be able to post pictures of themselves holding one. But how much will this privilege cost?

Buying one directly from Apple will cost you £499 for a 16GB model or £599 for a 32GB model, but most of you won't be going down that road, opting instead to spread the cost over 18 months or two years.

So far, Vodafone, O2, and Orange have revealed their tariffs, leaving T-Mobile, Tesco, and 3 to follow suit. We can expect good things from 3, incidentally: the company has claimed it's deliberately waiting for its rival operators to announce their iPhone 4 tariffs so that it can undercut them all - something it achieved with its iPad 3G data tariffs.

We'll add the stragglers to this chart in due course, but in the meantime here's all the information about the tariffs currently available in one handy place.

As well as the above, Vodafone offers SIM only PAYG plans for iPhone 4. A 30 day plan with 600 minutes, 3000 texts, 1GB data, and 1GB BT Openzone access costs £25, while a 12 month plan with the same allowances costs £20 a month. Upping the minutes to 900 increases the 12 month plan to £25 a month.

Orange also offers five PAYG tariffs for iPhone 4, all strangely named after mammals and birds: Monkey, Canary, Dolphin, Raccoon, and Camel. These entail buying an iPhone from Orange for £480 and £570 respectively for the 16GB and 32GB models, undercutting Apple by £20 and £30. Topping up £50 in the first month will get you £10 off your handset.

Each animal comes with 250MB of data, along with the following:

Monkey: free music and texts.
Dolphin: unlimited free texts.
Canary: free evening and weekend calls.
Raccoon: 15p calls, 10p texts.
Camel: call abroad from 5p.

3 Mobile also offers PAYG tariffs at £15 and £25 for a one month rolling and 12 month contract respectively. You get 300 and 2000 any network minutes (plus 5000 3-to-3), a GB of data, and 3000 and 5000 texts.

How much you'll end up paying

That's how the tariffs break down. Now to look at what you'll end up actually paying for your handset and the use of it by the time your contract ends.

The record in this category goes to Orange, which will end up taking £1829 from you if you opt for a 32GB iPhone 4 at the most expensive tariff. Still much less than Gizmodo paid, however, and you'll probably get to keep your computers.

O2 has the distinction of offering the cheapest overall package, with its 16GB iPhone 4 at the lowest tariff costing a mere £749.
