Originally billed as a DSi-exclusive (pictured here), Dark Void Zero has been announced for release on iPhone and iPod touch.

The retro-style side-scrolling action game serves as a prequel for console game Dark Void, which has you flying around using a jet pack shooting aliens in an alternate dimension.

Despite the console game's underwhelming reception, Dark Void Zero has fared well with critics; however, mediocre sales on DSi have likely prompted Capcom to release it to the App Store.

Although the game won't pack any new levels, the iPhone version does support OpenFeint. That means exclusive achievements, leaderboards, and chatrooms.

Capcom also promises reconfigured controls, though the company didn't go into detail as to whether that means use of a virtual directional pad or some other scheme.

Dark Void Zero will be available for iPhone and iPod touch on April 12 at a price of £1.49/$2.99.
