PR is a strange art. The efficacy of this particular manoeuvre is yet to be seen, but it's intriguing enough to merit a mention, if only for the internet research it necessitated on the accomplishments of Mike Nesmith.

To promote the launch of social iPhone quiz game QRANK, developer Ricochet Labs has announced a celebrity showdown between Mike Nesmith (who was in the Monkees and who's credited in a roundabout way with creating MTV), and Richard Garriott (who created Ultima and has been in space).

These two are joined by eight other 'celebrities', amongst them Rick Moody, author of bourgeois tragedy The Ice Storm, and Deus Ex designer Harvey Smith.

The game itself pulls questions from the internet every day in order to automatically stay current. We can't tell you how well this works as the game isn't available yet - it's coming out soon on iPhone and Facebook.

The competition is underway now. The winner will receive $500 to donate to a charity of his choice and a pair of Norwegian curling trousers.
