News is spreading like wildfire through the video game blogosphere concerning Sony’s acquisition of the Ghostbusters licence from Atari. Ghostbusters will now appear on PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, with a PSP version due to follow in a few months.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, who broke the story, it’s unclear at this point what’s going to happen to the 360 version. No mention is made of the DS version, screenshots for which were released as recently as April 23rd, but presumably Nintendo will be left in the same position as Microsoft.

It’s possible that both Microsoft and Nintendo will be given the green light to publish versions of the games on their respective platforms once a period of exclusivity expires, and given the late stage in both games’ development this seems likely.

But then, Sony badly needs exclusives and Atari badly needs cash. Sony and Atari will no doubt let us know exactly what those two factors add up to in due course.

[Update: No sooner had I published this story than VG247 got word from an Atari rep that Ghostbusters is definitely coming out for DS, Wii and 360 later this year - ed)
