Just last month publisher Empire told the world it was in the process of making a new and updated Pipe Mania game for DS and PSP (as well as Wii, PS2, Xbox 360 and PC).

Today it's released screenshots of the DS version in action – which show pipes of all descriptions being laid on the touchscreen against the clock.

Like the original version (first released by Empire back in 1989) players lay down differently shaped pieces of pipe to connect a start and finishing point before the constantly flowing Flooze reaches the end of your construction. It requires plenty of forward thinking and a lot of panic and is basically about as addictive as puzzle games get.

Unlike the original, however, the new game also expands on the idea, adding new themes and play mechanics – such as the train tracks shown in the screenshots. Meanwhile, the DS stylus control should be well suited to selected and laying down bits of pipe.

There's no firm release date planned as yet – it's just down for a 2008 release. As soon as something more specific leaks our way, we'll let you know.
