Since it was announced last week, Midway's DS version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat has really caught the attention of all blood-thirsty dualscreen fans.

Let's face it, there's not been a lot of competition when it comes to beating your opponent into a pulp, let alone ripping out their spinal column in a cloud of arterial flow.

And now we can see the action in, erm, action with the release of the first in-game footage:

Also released have been a couple of screenshots of the Puzzle Kombat mini-game. This looks something like Tetris meets a Bejeweled, and sees you trying to keep the piles of coloured blocks below the Kaution level. You do this by stacking your blocks in such a way that you can drop breaker blocks on them – thus removing all blocks of the same colour as the breaker – and hopefully triggering combos as the blocks disappear and fall down on those below.

Of course, this being Mortal Kombat, as you remove your blocks, they'll be sent over to fill up your opponent's side of the screen.

Other fighting-style gameplay involves the Super Meter, which fills up as you destroy blocks, and when full, enable you to trigger attacks that are based on the Mortal Kombat character you've chosen to play as. The speed at which your meter fills also depends on your chosen character.

Like the main game, Puzzle Kombat will use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for online multiplayer.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat is due for release sometime in November. Click 'Track It!' to stay in the ring.
