Chess usually leaves the battle to the imagination, but Warhammer 40,000 Regicide will combine the classic strategy with the gore and brutal kills expected from a Warhammer game when it releases on May 19th.

Warriors from various Ork clans and space marine chapters stand in for your pawns, rooks, and so on, each unit with special abilities and gory finishers that reduce enemy pieces to crimson mist.

The titular Regicide mode combines chess-style movement, with an action phase where you can unleash special attacks and faction abilities in turn-based tactics. A mode with classic Chess rules is also available.

Besides a single player campaign and skirmishes, you'll also be able to face your friends in asynchronous battles and cross-platform multiplayer against Steam players.

Warhammer 40,000: Regicide will be available on iPad and iPhone for £2.99 / $3.99 next week.
