Fast and the Furious 3 gears up for phones

Fans of The Fast and The Furious will be delighted to discover that not only is there a third film in the series Tokyo Drift speeding its way to the big screen, but there's also a mobile game en route too. Considering the first two outings have far merited in the region of 4 million downloads, this should bring a smile to quite a few of you.

The latest instalment in the fast-driving franchise focuses upon new hot-headed street racer Sean Boswell who, after a few scrapes with John Q Law, is sent to live with his estranged father in Tokyo. Whilst there he is introduced to the underground world of drift racing, a rubber burning automotive artform that combines high speed racing with precision gliding around heart-stopping hairpins. Suffice to say much testosterone-fuelled postering and many fast camera cuts ensue.

Although precise details are still a little sparse, the game, which is due to hit small screens alongside the film this summer, is likely to feature a brand new engine and a whole new style of racing action in line with the slip-sliding thrills of titles like Ridge Racer than existing mobile racers.

Creators of the movie and thus granters of the mobile rights, Universal Studios, are certainly upbeat about the games prospects, with their Vice President of Media, Licensing and Strategy, Jeremy Laws declaring his happiness in best marketing speak. "I-play has built The Fast and The Furious into the most successful racing franchise in mobile gaming today [and] we look forward to continued and enhanced success for these games."

We'll let you know whether or not this optimism is well-founded when we catch sight of a preview version in the near future. As usual, you can stay ahead of the pack with the merest click upon the 'Track It' button above.
