Soul Calibur (officially written as SoulCalibur, if we're being pedantic) has surprised us all by arriving on the New Zealand App Store, meaning it'll be slicing its way into the UK and US from midnight tonight.

Originally released on the doomed Sega Dreamcast console back in 1998, Soul Calibur differentiated itself from all other beat-'em-up titles of the day through its eye-catching 3D graphics and sword-wielding protagonists.

It was also one of the first fighting games to feature true 3D movement, which allowed you to run about the enclosed arenas in all directions, rather than just use the depth of the play area to avoid blows. Who needs Wikipedia, eh?

High-definition = high price

This HD remake for iPhone and iPad gives the graphics an extra sheen, and includes five modes to take the 19 characters through, ranging from Arcade Battle and Time Attack right through to Survival and the vicious one-hit Extra Survival setting.

What's going to split fans down the middle like a slice from Sophitia's blade is the fact that the price puts it firmly in the upper echelons of the App Store - £7.99 / $11.99.

Soul Calibur will be out in the UK and US as a Universal app from midnight this evening.
