New Sonic The Hedgehog game announced, promises return to 2D roots

Project Needlemouse for DS, mobile, iPhone? Maybe even PSP Minis

New Sonic The Hedgehog game announced, promises return to 2D roots

Sonic Unleashed received a mostly unwelcome reception across a variety of platforms, though critics were generally enamoured by the brief moment when Sonic returned to his Mega Drive roots in the side-on, 2D stretches of gameplay.

Apparently, Sega was listening, as it has just announced a new instalment of the famous racing rodent, codenamed Project Needlemouse.

"Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the [Mega Drive]. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots," Sega's Ken Balough tells Gamespot.

Details are thin, other than we're looking at a return to Sonic's original 2D style, built from the ground up and with HD graphics. All we know so far is a teaser trailer dating the game for 2010, with the original Sonic logo silhouetted against the backdrop.

A teaser website has also sprung up, showing contemporary versions of Green Hill levels.

Hopefully Project Needlemouse won't bypass the pocket platforms, given that the iPhone, DS and PSP are all in desperate need of a first rate Sonic The Hedgehog game. More news as it comes in.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
