Scurvy Scallywags is a meta-musical match-three RPG mash-up

Few would be be able find a fresh twist on that most comatose of genres, the match-three puzzler.

But Ron Gilbert, the mastermind behind Monkey Island, has only gone and done it, hasn't he.

Scurvy Scallyways is Gilbert's latest game, and it's out now on iPhone and iPad. It's a match-three puzzler with a wicked smart new mechanic and RPG elements. Oh, and it's also a Broadway musical.

You see, while most of your time is spent acting like a swashbuckling hero on an adventurous quest to discover a long-lost sea shanty, you'll also have to aid the meta-level musical with maintenance side-quests.

You collect quest items by guiding your pirate around the board. The gems (and parrots and grog and pieces of eight) shift in the direction of your last match, so you can move your hero to items or away from zombie foes.

Along the way, you'll unlock costumes for your character, build new ships, equip skills, buy weapons, and choose stats to upgrade (that's the RPG bit).

Scurvy Scallywags is available on the App Store right now. It's going to cost ya 69p / 99c (for a short while, then it will go up to £1.49 / $1.99).

Gilbert built Scurvy Scallywags in collaboration with Clayton Kauzlaric. Kauzlaric and Gilbert previously made parody RPG DeathSpank and iOS gem The Big Big Castle!
