Ron Gilbert has submitted his piratical match-three adventure Scurvy Scallywags to Apple for approval

On his Grumpy Gamer blog, legendary Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert has revealed some juicy details about his upcoming piratical match-three puzzler Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG (or Scurvy Scallywags, for short).

In this salty sea dog of a game, Gilbert and co-conspirator Clayton Kauzlaric have mashed some nautical-themed object matching with an RPG progression system to create an original gameplay experience that's worthy of a shanty of its own.

In terms of plot, Scurvy Scallywags is all about a stage production in search of the best pirate shanty there ever was.

Inevitably, someone's trying to sabotage the stars of this musical's efforts, so it's up to you to take to the seas, nab some booty, and foil the evil plot.

Cue a clever matching system in which your pirate is sent around a specially designed game board that moves in the direction of your last match.

You'll need to line the board up right if you want to grab the biggest treasures, of course. While you're making your way through four mysterious worlds seeking the lost verses of the greatest shanty ever, errr, shant-ed, you'll get involved in some scraps. No, you will.

Gilbert has submitted a build of the game to Apple for approval, so Scurvy Scallywags should be sailing onto iPhone and iPad in the not-too-distant future.

We'll let you know when it surfaces the second it docks in the App Store.
