It was action at a distance for Newton and the deformation of space-time geometry to Einstein, but for Australian developer Wired Developments, the gravitational pull of the planets is the opportunity to make an iPhone game.

Rocketeer takes the physics in space gameplay and spreads it across dozens of missions that have you attempting to find a path between increasingly complex planetary configurations as you fire a rocket, complete with its little spaceman rider, into a blue vortex.

Round and round the celestial body

As with many of such physics games, you tap anywhere on the screen to fire - your distance from the launching point defines the velocity of your rocketeer, and hence how much his trajectory is affected by the different planet types.

You can launch up to four rockets at a time, with your goal to solve each level using the least amount of launches, although you can fire off as many as you like. Once solved, you can go back and attempt to reduce your score for each level.

The first version of the game ships with 80 levels, but Wired Developments informs us it's already working on more for the next update.

Available for iPhone and iPod touch, and for iPad in the shape of Rocketeer HD, all versions of the game cost 99c, €0.79 or 59p.

You can see how it plays below.
