Retro City Rampage: DX, the remake of the lo-fi GTA-em-up, comes to Vita next week

The Gold Award-winning Retro City Rampage may only be two years old but it's already getting a remake.

Yep, Retro City Rampage: DX comes to Vita (and PS3, PS4) on November 12th in Europe, November 11th in the US.

It'll have cross-buy and cross-save across all three PlayStation platforms. And it'll cost you €7.99 / $9.99 unless you're a PS Plus member, in which case you get 20% off.

The obvious question is why on Earth does Retro City Rampage need a top-to-bottom remake already?

Developer Brian Provinciano has answered this in long-form over on the PlayStation blog. I'll do my best here to summarise what he writes.

In essence, DX is the version of Retro City Rampage that was released on Nintendo 3DS earlier this year. Provinciano called it the "definitive version".

Missions, difficulty, weapons and police AI have all been re-balanced. There are new zoom modes, a dynamic camera, and a new lightweight UI.

"The new 3X zoom option's tailored specifically for the PS Vita," Provinciano writes.

There are new "Retro+" and "8-Bit" graphics modes, the former of which comes with better shadows and more effects.

New controls make dodging enemies easier while a new weapon selection grid making it easier to switch weapons.

There's also a new trophy set that is easier to 100%. As well as a larger mini-map, a jukebox with 147 tracks, and tighter Arcade challenges.

DX also adds parking garages so you can store vehicles. New weapon trucks encourage you to hijack them to get a tool you're after easier.

Lastly, there's a Cop Coin that reduces your wanted level now. You can get it by defeating three cops in a fight.

And, if you don't want all of these additions and extra options, you can switch back to the original Retro City Rampage as DX comes with it.
