Despite there being just 13 games available at the launch of Sony's new bite-sized range of handheld gaming, PSP Minis, the company has told Joystiq of a massive spike in PlayStation Network revenues and downloads.

According to the chief of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), Eric Lempel, the launch week for PSP Minis (also launch week for the handheld hardware reboot, the PSPgo) marks the highest number of game downloads Sony has ever seen in a week's period.

"[PSPgo launch week] was our second highest week of revenue in the history of PlayStation Network," explains Lempel. "It's been tremendously busy on the storefront."

Early reactions to PSP Minis has been very positive, offering much-needed competition to the iPhone and its App Store, and Nintendo's DSiWare.

Lempel concluded by saying that as yet, Sony's internal developers have yet to begin work on any first party PSP Minis.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
