Slitherine is flying Panzer Corps over from the PC to the iPad tonight. It won't come cheap, by the way, for it'll have a £13.99 / $19.99 price tag wrapped around its virtual neck.

This World War II grand strategy game is the spiritual successor to the Panzer General series. It's been praised on PC for the challenging turn-based battles and the sheer variety of strategic options.

You'll be occupying the general's tent for the Axis armies, dishing out the orders to ensure your forces successfully complete 26 campaign levels across Europe.

Tree of life

Thanks to the branching campaign tree, you can enter the war from various points on the timeline. Plus, the manner in which you fare in each battle will have an effect on the campaign. So, victories will lead to different challenges from the ones you'd face if you had accrued losses.

You may be surprised at just how large Panzer Corps is in terms of scale: you can pick from over 800 unit types (split into 19 unit classes) and 17 terrain types. Tanks on ice doesn't sound like a match made in heaven.

Not all of the units will hold your attention for long, though, as only your core force can gain experience and be upgraded with new weaponry as it comes. Playing favourites may be wise, then.

Just in case the base game isn't enough for you, the Grand Campaign Mega Pack, Allied Corps, and Afrika Korps expansions are available as IAPs.

Those of you who already have Panzer Corps on PC will be pleased to read that you can switch platforms and take your matches across to iPad with you. Handy if you have to leave the house but don't want to stop playing.

Cross-platform asynchronous multiplayer is another noteworthy feature, meaning iPad players don't need to worry about finding online opponents as there should be plenty on PC to fight already.

If you're ready to take on the role as general, make sure you pick Panzer Corps up at midnight tonight for your iPad. It'll set you back £13.99 / $19.99.
