iPhone 4 unboxing

The day has come

iPhone 4 unboxing

It's here. Gizmodo showed it to us first, and then Steve Jobs showed it to us in a better way that made everybody in the room with him gasp and applause. Now we have an iPhone 4 of our very own.

Apple's all new wondergadget boasts two cameras, LED flash, high definition video recording, a three-axis gyroscope, a 1 Ghz A4 processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 960x640 display. According to many left-handed customers, it also has trouble making calls, but a fix for this problem is rumoured to be on the way.

If you're waiting for yours, here's what the experience of unboxing one looks like.

Here it is in its box. For some reason, it looks a bit like an Escher drawing at the moment.

And now like a Pharoah gazing up from its slab. Already covered in fingerprints, of course.

When you get to this stage in your own unboxing process, your USB connector will look tidier. I had to hastily shove it back in to create the illusion that the photo you're looking at is actually the first unboxing. It's not - the real unboxing took place about ten minutes earlier. Sorry.

Here's what comes in the box. A pair of headphones, a plug adaptor, and a USB connector.

And here are the instructions, the warranty information, and two stickers. It's not clear where you're supposed to put them. Former Pocket Gamer intern Ben Maxwell pasted his to the outside of his non-Apple laptop to make it look like a MacBook - a move he unconvincingly told us was ironic.

The instructions, in concertina form.

The ceremonial peeling of the clear plastic from the screen. I have two comments to make about this. One, for reasons outlined above I had to reattach this plastic protector before removing it for the shot. And two, the dirt under my thumbnail is the result of my experimentally prising open an immature walnut with it last weekend. The stain won't come out.

I even went to the trouble of taking this thumbless picture to cover up my shame, but it looks weird.

This is how the iPhone 4 looks in an average male hand.

A photo of myself taken with a camera whilst looking at myself through the iPhone's inward-facing lens. I call it 'infinite loop'.

The front-facing camera and flash.

In inward-facing camera and ear speaker.

The volume controls and 'silent mode' button.

The microphone (left), the speaker (right), and the 30-pin dock connector (middle).

Where the SIM goes.

The 3.5mm headphone jack and the 'lock' button.

Where the box will live for several months, next to the old sat-nav box that I can't bring myself to throw away and the books I can't admit to myself I'll never read.
