The latest weekly hardware sales figures from Japan show PSP has sold 92,411, ensuring Sony's handheld extended its lead over its competitors in the week ending April 27th.

This brings the 2008 PSP sales to almost 1.5 million to date, reports industry news site gi.biz.

While Sony celebrates, however, Nintendo will be left in pensive mood as DS managed 42,435 in the same weekly period. A fact compounded by the handheld seeing its usual second place taken up by its Wii console cousin (which sold 48,796).

The latest figure puts DS's 2008 sales performance at 1.24 million units. Hardly cause for alarm, and even Nintendo has stated that it expects a slowdown in the handheld's performance.

The news here isn't DS, though, but rather PSP's apparent resurgence at a crucial time in the portable's existence. We'll keep watching the situation with interest, particularly in the western markets where there are signs a similar situation may be occurring (although currently not quite in as pronounced a fashion).
