And why thirtysomething mobile users love Sonic The Hedgehog

Orange reveals 'Atari Generation' of mobile gamers

Mobile operators are often quite cagey about revealing how popular their mobile content services are, so hats off to Orange, which has spilled some interesting beans in its new Digital Media Index.

For example, Orange users downloaded nearly 250,000 mobile games a month on average in the first three months of this year, with the average age of downloaders being 30 – leading the operator to dub mobile gamers the 'Atari generation'.

The operator also revealed its top 10 selling games for the quarter, topped by Sonic The Hedgehog Part 1, Worms 2006, and Space Invaders Anniversary Edition.

The implications? Don't expect the flood of retro mobile games to ease up anytime soon. But the research also showed that mobile games are strong sellers compared to other types of mobile content, which is good news for the industry as a whole.
