It's Breakout, but definitely not as you know it

Many games have promised to update the classic Breakout bat, ball and bricks gameplay, but all most of them manage to add is a funky background and some new power-ups.

Which is why we were so interested to hear about Eidos' Nervous Brickdown when it was announced back in May. The screenshots, showing all sorts of inventive bat-related fun, appeared to suggest someone was at last taking the Breakout mechanic to a unique new level.

And now that Eidos has released gameplay footage of Nervous Brickdown, due imminently on DS, our hopes seem fulfilled. Whether it's juggling people falling out of boats, or the Asteroids-style bouncing of lasers into objects, this game takes the bat-and-ball concept and goes all WarioWare wacky on us.

By the looks of it, every DS feature will be used – from drawing your own bat (similar to the Air Hockey game in Super Monkey Ball) in a level played on a notebook, to blowing away ghosts with the DS mic.

Your in-game paddle is controlled by physically moving it left and right (even up and down) with the stylus, so as to knock the ball, person, laser or whatever it is you're hitting in that particular level, into the obstacles.

The levels themselves look like they have the variety of a surrealist's sketchpad, being played over rivers of frogs and jungles full of animals. There's even a game of crazy golf where your paddle becomes a golf club.

It's all so amazingly fast, too, so you're clearly going to need superhero-quick reactions to keep up. Think you can handle it? Check out the video for yourself here:
