Mutropolis review - "A witty sci-fi adventure"
  • Super challenging puzzles
  • Witty humor
  • An engaging tale of gods and archaeologists

Mutropolis, the witty point-and-click adventure in which you play as archaeologist Henry Dijon long after Earth's been abandoned, has made its mobile debut. After your boss, Totel, is kidnapped during an excavation and the securi-police close the case, it’s up to you to find him.

Save Your Boss to Save the World in Mutropolis

What starts as a simple kidnapping case becomes so much more when Henry learns that Totel was kidnapped by a mischievous god hellbent on completing a ritual that would make him more powerful than any other god. Now with an unlikely ally at his side, Henry must find a way to stop the ritual and save Totel before it’s too late.

Of course, to solve this mystery, you'll need the help of your co-workers, Micro, Luc, and Carlota. Carlota is Totel's loyal assistant, while Micro and Luc are brothers and members of your expedition team. While Luc and Micro are identical, their personalities differ greatly. Micro is serious about work and cares deeply for the team robot, Max. Luc, on the other hand, is more laid back and forgetful.

Eventually, you’ll team up with a strange goddess who doesn't understand personal space or the difference between a face and a skull but is incredibly powerful. With your team assembled, you'll be able to return to Earth to begin your search for Totel in earnest.

Mutropolis is Incredibly Witty

One thing Mutropolis has in spades is wit. You play as an archaeologist thousands of years after the Earth has been abandoned, and much humour comes from this premise. You’ll come across many funny and entirely incorrect descriptions of famous people and common objects as you point-and-click your way to herodom. Henry Dijon’s awkwardness also makes for quite a few laughs.

The controls vary a bit from the usual mobile point-and-click controls. You still tap the screen to move and interact with objects. However, to select an item from your inventory, you must select it, then close the inventory screen, and then drag the chosen object onto the desired spot. You’ll continue to move the object about until either you place it correctly or go into your inventory and tap the X to deselect it.

Henry and Isis in a cave

Several times, I found myself accidentally interacting with an item from my inventory after forgetting to go back to the menu and deselect it. Still, it’s a good control scheme once you get used to it.

Mutropolis Offers a Real Challenge

Mutropolis features incredibly challenging puzzles, and there's no hand-holding. There is no hint system to guide you when you get stuck. You’ll really need to think outside the box. Whether attempting to secure passage to Earth, attempting to overcome Henry’s fear of holes, or searching for an entrance to the mythical city of Mutropolis, it will likely take some trial and error to figure out a solution.

While the intense difficulty combined with the lack of a hint system can be frustrating, you’ll feel a true sense of accomplishment each time you figure out how to progress. Further, if you find yourself completely stuck, there are online guides to help you out.

Henry visiting Frida in the morgue

Featuring an engaging plot and a quirky cast of characters, this futuristic adventure will quickly lure you in. However, the super challenging puzzles can be quite frustrating, especially since you're never offered any hints.

Still, with its witty humour and distinct premise, Mutropolis is one point-and-click adventure worth experiencing.
