Monster Hunter Outlanders debuts producer interview to give a behind-the-scenes look
  • Monster Hunter Outlanders' new developer TiMi Group has debuted a behind-the-scenes interview
  • It tells us more about the origins of the partnership and what we can expect from release
  • That includes overhauled combat, mechanics and more

I think it'd be fair to say that Monster Hunter has one of the more dedicated Capcom fanbases out there. For the longest time, the series didn't enjoy the kind of attention that more iconic franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil did. However, after the release of Rise and World, the series saw a new surge in attention, and after Monster Hunter Now, we're about to see the first "proper" instalment on mobile.

Monster Hunter Outlanders is set to be a full-fledged entry in the series, in the sense that it's not AR or otherwise a spin-off. And that means a lot of questions about just how developer TiMi can translate that to mobile. For a lot of you Monster Hunter fans, those aren't idle questions either.

Fortunately, a new entry in an ongoing series of producer interviews with Outlanders producers Dong Huang and Genki Susano offers more background. From what I've seen, it's not exactly in-depth, but overall it offers some intriguing background on Outlanders, and a few assurances that this'll be true to the Monster Hunter spirit.

While it's great to get more background on the enthusiasm for the Monster Hunter series, I don't think I'm the only one who's more interested in the very pertinent question of how Monster Hunter Outlanders will be released and monetised. I think there are plenty of series that have seen adaptations for mobile which, while first-rate in terms of mechanics and design, have been let down by being forced to adhere to the free-to-play format (the vociferous reaction to Diablo Immortal's initial announcement comes to mind).

I don't doubt that this is more than likely what Monster Hunter Outlanders will do, but hopefully it'll be done in a thoughtful enough way that it doesn't let down the obviously thoughtful design process we see in the interview.
