2nd G sells out on first day of release

Monster Hunter PSP madness

Last Thursday's Japanese launch of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G on PSP ended with shop shelves completely stripped of all copies, according to subsequent online reports.

As isn't unusual in Japan, several shops opened early to shoppers in response to the anticipated demand and queues, and some had upward of 300 customers waiting to snap up the latest outing for a franchise that has never been anything other than huge news in its homeland.

The first PSP Monster Hunter game topped one million sales there, while the second is nearing two million. At this rate, 2nd G – a sort of expansion of the sequel – is looking like it might even beat that. Even special edition PSP bundles (pictured) containing the game were said to have sold out.

It's all good news for Sony, of course, who should see its handheld regain its position as the current best-selling console in Japan for a little longer – PSP has already topped the hardware sales chart for most of the last few weeks there.

Now all you need is for the just-released God of War to have a similar effect in Europe (and the US, where it was out at the beginning of the month) and Sony will really be gunning for glory.
