These mobile games feel more like Metal Gear than Metal Gear Survive

Metal Gear Survive launches on console and PC this week, but in the lead-up to release there's been a distinctly negative reaction from fans of Konami's legendary stealth series.

Whether the game turns out to be good or not (the initial reaction seems to be pretty positive), it's not hard to see why.

This is the first Metal Gear game made in the post-Hideo Kojima era. The colourful series creator acrimoniously parted ways with publisher Konami immediately after Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain hit shops in 2015.

Not only that, but Metal Gear Survive appears to have been made rather hastily from components of that aforementioned masterpiece. What's more, it's nothing like the Metal Gear Solid games we know and love. Instead of a single player military stealth adventure, Metal Gear Survive is a multiplayer-focused survival game with zombies in it.

There aren't any official Metal Gear Solid games available on mobile any more, but these games arguably have more in common with Metal Gear than Metal Gear Survive does.

Deus Ex: The Fall

Deus Ex: The Fall mixes slick third person stealth with tense first person shooting in true Metal Gear Solid style.

Squint a little and you could be playing a future Solid Snake, skulking through a high-tech dystopia taking out baddies with a silenced pistol shot to the head.

Just like the later Metal Gear Solid games, Deus Ex: The Fall offers you multiple approaches to its various scenarios, while the game's histrionic conspiracy-driven story should also please MGS fans.

Assassin's Creed Identity

A big-budget console series starring a super-capable, super-stealthy assassin? That sounds familiar.

Of course, the Assassin's Creed series tends to be set in the past, but it's just as crazy as Hideo Kojima's series in its own way. Plugging into the memories of your ancient ancestors, anyone?

Assassin's Creed Identity offers a surprisingly credible approximation of the console AC experience, offering a tense third-person sneak-a-thon that Solid Snake would surely approve of.

Hacking the cameras in a secure facility to help a prisoner escape sounds like the sort of inventive scenario you'd find in a Metal Gear Solid game. It actually forms the basis of an entire mobile game in Republique.

Watch the static camera feeds and let the appropriately named Hope know when and to wear she should move.

You even get to hide in lockers and vents. If there's anything more Metal Gear than that (short of scuttling around in a cardboard box), we haven't seen it.

Hitman: Sniper

Some of the most memorable moments of the early Metal Gear Solid series involved looking down the scope of a sniper rifle. Who can forget the Sniper Wolf encounter from the first game?

Hitman: Sniper is a fun sniping game that casts you as videogaming's other modern day stealthy bad-ass, Agent 47.

The way you can distract the attention of guards by setting off car alarms and knock them off mountains by turning on giant fans also feels rather Metal Gear.
