Nokia confirms Nseries switch over from Symbian to Maemo
Mass market and flagship phones moving to Maemo by 2012
The Nokia N900 is gaining a lot of critical interest thanks to its advanced feature set, but it's also an important step for Nokia as a bridging device.
It's been suspected since August that Nokia was to favour the new Maemo platform over Symbian, and at an N900 showcase event in London this week, the mobile giant confirmed that the OS switch over for its flagship Nseries was official.
Nokia was keen to point out that the transition was currently only planned for the Nseries range of handsets, however, which will be gradually turned over to Maemo by 2012.
The Symbian system will be retained to run alongside the high-end devices that will initially adopt Maemo, though the further suggestion that the new operating system will eventually drive 'mass-market' devices does suggest Nokia is very much behind this new platform.
Overwhelmingly positive response to the N900 is undoubtedly a big part of Nokia's decision to push Maemo hard, and will hopefully lead to some serious new entries into the smartphone market - especially once the Maemo application portal is merged with the Ovi Store.
