PG's top 5 moments of the week - Dungeon Keeper scandal, Flappy Bird saga...

Every week, Pocket Gamer provides a weekly digest of the most important and popular stories from these digital pages.

It has been an exciting week for mobile gamers.

In the one corner, you've got the inexplicable popularity of Flappy Bird. In the other, you've got embattled EA trying to deal with Dungeon Keeper haters.

And then somewhere off in the other corner, there's a bunch of people just playing Threes! and ignoring all the free-to-play furore.

We witnessed the meteoric rise of Flappy Bird Flappy Bird

This week, it felt like we entered a bizarre time warp to 2010. That's because every mobile gamer in the world seemed to be obsessed with a silly little game about birds. They're not angry, though. They're flappy.

Regardless of these gamers' emotional states, this pointless piece of digital detritus has had analysts ripping up the rule books, journalists accusing developer Dong Nguyen of using App Store exploits, and everyone else just entranced by a game that took 6 seconds to create.

We jumped on the bandwagon, of course. At the start of the week, we picked out some side-scrolling endless-runners that have a lot in common with Flappy Bird... except for the fact that they're actually good.

We also reported on the game's Android debut and resurrected the ghost of Gamer X for a good old-fashioned Pocket Gamer score showdown. Think you've got what it takes?

Everyone still hates Dungeon Keeper Dungeon Keeper

EA threw a little coal into the Internet Hate Machine this week with the revelation that it's not as easy as it should be to give Dungeon Keeper a low rating.

EA responded to the scandal some (one) reporters are calling "Rate Gate-gate" by saying that the gate "was designed to help us collect valuable feedback from players who don't feel the game is worth a top rating".

In other news, we picked out six other old-school franchises that EA should leave the hell alone, lest they sour our memories with IAP-addled freemium nonsense. Seriously, though, leave Theme Hospital out of this.

We made a deposit in the Pokemon Bank Pokemon Y

The great banking crisis of 2014 came to an end as Nintendo finally launched critter storage solution Pokemon Bank around the world.

With this handy app, you can store 3,000 monsters on Nintendo's servers, and transfer critters between 3DS and DS games.

You can also pick up a free Celebi to use in Pokemon X and Y with the Pokemon Bank app, so just follow our guide to get this legendary 'mon on your team.

We picked the best games of January on iOS and Android Shadow Blade

If we exclusively covered home consoles, a January games round-up would probably consist of an Xbox Live Arcade game about fly fishing and not much else.

The world of mobile isn't so barren, though.

No. In January 2014, you see, iOS devs released as many great games on iPhone and iPad as they do in any other month, including cartoon crime caper Detective Grimoire, mash-up mouthful Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and ninja platformer Shadow Blade.

Over on Android, we got such treats as cybernetic shooter Deus Ex: The Fall and bed-and-breakfast defender Bad Hotel, which made up for spending half the month submerged in flood water.

We played Threes! until we saw numbered tiles in our sleep Threes

If you aren't talking about Flappy Bird or Dungeon Keeper, chances are you're talking about Threes!, the ultra-addictive number cruncher from the guys who made Puzzlejuice.

We gave it a Gold Award. We said: "Despite some frustrating chaotic elements, Threes! is a dashing, intelligent, and deceptively simple treat. This is your next essential puzzler".

It's also one of our three iOS picks of the week (along with a celestial juggler and a polarising port). Plus, Carter over at 148Apps held a Twitch broadcast with Threes! developers Asher Vollmer and Greg Wohlwend to learn some tricks.

Not that it helped Carter much. He's still way behind me on Game Center.

Around Steel Media

This week at 148Apps, our pals across the ocean reviewed Threes!, Toast Time, Marvel Run, Jump Smash!, and more, including new 148Apps Live segments.
