Nokia drops giant news bombs left, right and centre

It's the Pocket Picks round-up

Nokia drops giant news bombs left, right and centre

The last seven days in mobile news irrefutably belonged to Nokia on our sister site Pocket Picks, not least as a result of Nokia's Go Play event erupting mid-week.

However, that doesn't mean there wasn't room for anyone else.

In fact, just before the week began we got our eager little mitts on an iPhone (in Europe!) for the first time, putting it through its paces and taking the opportunity to snap the little blighter whilst fingering through the pages of Pocket Picks via its browser.

Shortly after, we entertained a rumour about the possibility of a press event to officially announce the coming of the mythic Google phone, something we will hopefully be able to confirm as either true or false by next week.

After that it was largely over to the big N for the bulk of the week's news. It all kicked off with an announcement that Nokia's new mobile social networking site, MOSH, moved into public beta territory. We then got a first look at the chic new N-series styled headsets and speakers, while the slightly pointless but sexy looking DC1 portable charger was followed closely by the official unveiling of the LD-4W GPS module.

The really big Nokia announcements, however, came during Go Play, though not before a series of leaks started the party early. First with the new N95 and N81 handsets, and then with the colourful new Xpress line.

The official announcements came shortly after, with the unveiling of the 5310 XpressMusic preceding the 5610 XpressMusic slider. Then it was the new N95 and N81 handsets' turn to sparkle, which we soon got some more specific details on.

As if those weren't big enough revelations, Nokia also announced its new over-the-air music store and still found time to let the world know that the new N-Gage service will debut in November.

And unbelievably that wasn't all. The Finnish giant also drew back the curtains on its one-stop-shop internet gateway, Ovi, before finishing with a shot of an S60 touchscreen concept that looked suspiciously (and perhaps unavoidably) like a certain other touchscreen phone.

A render of Sony Ericsson's supposed iPhone combatant, the Mooi, also surfaced looking decidedly iPhone-like. There was also confirmation that the Walkman branded motion sensing W910i will come to both O2 and Vodafone in October.

Which brings us neatly around to the other big theme from the week: broadband mobile internet. Vodafone announced that before the end of the year it will be offering blistering HSDPA spec mobile internet speeds (though if you decide to go with 3 for a similar service, you'll get a free modem in return).

As for some of the smaller tid-bits that came through, we sounded-out a personal mobile signal blocker, a Caribbean paradise that has banned mobile phones, while Truphone put the ringtone concept in reverse with its new free InTones concept.

And after all that, the Pocket Picks collective crumpled in a heap to catch its breath and re-gather itself for the next seven days, which we will report in condensed form here next week. Click 'Track It!' to make sure you don't miss it.
