This week our sister site Pocket Picks was all about looking ahead, so read on to find out more about the handsets, services and applications you'll be using in the future.

Handsets first, and the mobile world sprung a leak with images of the new Sony Ericsson P700i hitting the web. Backing them up were some glossy shots of the sleek looking twin-screen Motorola V9 flip phone, illustrating how seductive big bright clear displays can be.

If a sparkling screens are enough to whip the average phone nut into a frenzy, then touchscreens can push them over the edge, which is what Nokia is no doubt banking on with plans to bring touchscreen interface functionality to the S60 phone operating system. According to a recent patent, LG is also keen to stay on top of the touchscreen trend.

Speaking of patents, a recently unearthed Intel submission reveals it's looking further into the future than the touchscreen era, with flexible displays for mobile devices. Probably still far away, but exciting nonetheless.

Considering the US iPhone launch is less than two months away, this week can only have been the quiet before the storm. News that initial US shipments of the device are to be fairly limited caused tech junkies everywhere to break out in cold sweats. Some will go disappointed: Cingular has reported a smartphone sales drop due to customers holding out until the iPhone is unleashed.

It was also revealed that Apple intends to add features to the iPhone's core set-up after launch. So assuming the device does make it to Europe before the end of the year, it may be even more feature-packed as well as easier to get hold of (hopefully).

Finally, two big service and application announcements that could have profound consequences for the industry at large.

Firstly, a neat application called Fring aims to do away with bothersome call charges for users of 3G and wi-fi enabled phone owners who also have an unlimited data plan. Essentially, the software enables the use of VoIP software such as Skype, Google Talk and MSN messenger.

The other piece of big news is that Nokia and a bunch of other giant industry players have finally decided to pool their efforts to give mobile wallet systems the global greenlight.

Of course, in the future you will also use your mobile to make your bicycle sound like a Harley Davidson, to learn how to communicate with the attendees of cricket matches, and be able to wave your handset around wildly in order to send text messages.
