Colin Walsh, a.k.a. Celsius Games Studios, has released another teaser trailer for his upcoming space trading sim Drifter, in which the dev shows off the game's combat system.

Drifter takes its cues from ambitious sandbox traders like Elite and its sequel Frontier, offering players a vast procedurally generated galaxy in which to go about their business.

The newest trailer for this Kickstarter-boosted project gives us a flavour of the ship-to-ship combat. In the footage (below), we see our hero starfighter squaring off against a number of hostile craft in the middle of an asteroid field.

As in Walsh's previous space shooter Red Nova, movement in Drifter takes place on a single plane, and battles play out in real time. This means you'll be swinging your craft left and right to bring enemy combatants into your crosshairs, then peppering their hulls with laser fire.

As with Elite (whose maker is also looking for funding on Kickstarter), Drifter is essentially an enormous sandbox. The finished product will feature 10,000 star systems, a core story, and a soundtrack by Super Meat Boy and Canabalt veteran Danny Baranowsky.

Though previous trailers suggested Drifter would be released in 2012, that particular launch window is conspicuous by its absence in the most recent teaser. We hope to see this one blast onto app stores in the next few months.
