Dragon Quest IX coming to western DS shores this summer

Nintendo has announced that it will be releasing Square Enix’s epic RPG Dragon Quest IX in Europe and the US this summer.

The title has been an enormous success in its home country of Japan, with over 4.15 million copies sold since its release in July of last year.

Following the well received DS updates of The Chapters of the Chosen and Hand of the Heavenly Bride in recent years, DQ IX represents the first wholly original Dragon Quest title to appear on the Nintendo handheld (discounting the likes of offshoots such as the wonderful Rocket Slime).

The title was first announced in 2006 to some surprise, owing to the fact that its predecessor had been an epic PS2 release. Nevertheless, early reviews (including a rare 40/40 in Japanese games mag Weekly Famitsu) appear to have justified the move to less powerful hardware.
