Assassin's Creed Pirates is now free to play and is stuffed with IAPs

Assassin's Creed Pirates is free to play now. Surprised? You should be - we are.

The Bronze Award-winning pirate-themed action adventure used to cost £2.99 / $4.99. But, yep, not it's completely free to download.

As you'd expect, the game is not stuff to the top of its mast with IAPs. A quick glance at the game reveals packs and packs of coins that you can buy with real money and spend inside the game.

There's a "Starter Pack" for £5.49, a "Supreme Pack" for £1.49, and a "Captain's Pack" at £69.99.

Ship customisation has been "upgraded", which means that you can spend these coins on making your ship better and prettier.

This update is part of the new "Cold Blood" content that rolled out for Assassin's Creed Pirates today.

It has you sailing north to the Arctic Seas to meet a "legendary" new crew member. They share their knowledge of the icy seas and how to manage resources with care.

If you haven't purchased Assassin's Creed Pirates before you can now download it for free on the App Store.

Ubisoft hasn't said whether it has or will be acknowledging players that purchased Pirates before it went free to play.

We have asked Ubisoft about this, though, so we'll update if and when we hear back.
