Gameloft's funky racer out now

Classic chase game Driver puts its foot down on iPhone

Driver has become something of an underground cult classic since it first appeared on PlayStation at the end of the last millennium, and considering the quality of 3D racers we've seen on iPhone it seems ideally suited to Apple's handheld.

What's even better is that it's out on the App Store already.

"Driver... speeds away from its genesis with a near-total overhaul of the PlayStation original," our own Tracy Erickson explained in his recent hands on when he visited Gameloft's Paris studio. "Vastly improved graphics, a wealth of control options, and numerous tweaks to the gameplay could well restart this ageing title."

The game pits you as an undercover cop called Tanner, who's posing as a getaway driver to work his way into the folds of a national crime syndicate. The Story mode features 40 missions across four gigantic cities, and promises lots of traffic on the roads, pedestrians on the pavement and lead in its boots.

Check out the trailer, and then speed on over to the App Store using the button below. Driver is waiting for you now at a quite reasonable £3.99 (and it's a 405MB download, so bear that in mind if you're hoping to take it to work with you today).

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
