Paramount feels the need, the need for speed: Top Gun on iPhone

It's not a great movie, but Top Gun defined its time, and continues to be extremely watchable. The flash of a F-14 Tomcat still brings us out in goosebumps.

Most of the game versions of the film have brought us out in stitches though: few movie licenses have been so ballsed-up. Let's hope Paramount and Freeverse manage to work some magic for the iPhone version of Top Gun, which has just been publicly revealed.

The game - an arcadey flight sim combat racer - picks up with our cocky cockpit heroes - Maverick and Iceman - now operating as instructors at the Top Gun training school.

Controls are obviously accelerometer-based so you'll be tilting to fly, while there are touchscreen buttons to fire your weapons, including Vulcan mini-gun and Sidewinder missiles. You'll be able to lock onto four enemies at a time.

The planes have been updated, so you'll be swinging around in the USAF's current air superiority fighter, the F-22 Raptor, as well as the B-2 stealth bomber. Tasks include making your way through ten environments and landing on an aircraft carrier.

The nasty black-planed enemy will make an appearance, of course, and will have to be shot down in the all-American way. You'll also have to avoid ground fire.

Technically, Paramount claims the game will be sparklingly responsive, with 50 frames per second promised on an iPod touch. This is said to be thanks to an optimised texture format while normal mapping is used to make the game look great without crashing the performance.

And no, you can't request a flypass...
