I sometimes worry about the number of times I mention Bejeweled every day at Pocket Gamer, but it’s just so central to mobile gaming that it’s become a phrase all of its own.
I can spend three paragraphs explaining a new title’s gameplay, or I can just say “Bejeweled clone”, and the world knows intimately what I’m talking about.
Likewise, so many game developers begin their cycle of creation by swapping a few elements of Bejeweled’s styling, eliminating others and seeing what sort of entertaining combinations fall into place.
The match-three type of game has seen so many variations that it’s become a genre all of its own, with the only membership requirement being an innovative new way to shuffle icons and eliminate others.
As limited as it sounds, when we compare the likes of Jewel Quest 2 and Hexic they barely seem related at all, yet both manage to exploit that simple, flawless gameplay mechanic to its fullest.
We all have our favourites - the jewel encrusted game with just the right theme, modification or nuance to suit our personality - so we decided to swap a few around and come up with the 100% Gems of the match three game.
