First look at iPhone's Need For Speed Undercover

The dudes over at Kotaku have managed to get their hands on a preview copy of EA's flagship Q4 iPhone title, Need For Speed Undercover.

From the description, this sounds to play much like a mobile phone racer - with your boot pressed automatically to the floor throughout, rather than any accelerator controls.

Brakes and speed are applied automatically on the corners depending how well aligned you are on the curve, which sounds like a pretty decent compromise (as we're not huge fans of touchscreen buttons on driving games - they're too easy to lose).

All this sounds fairly standard, but what's most impressive are the visuals. Need For Speed Undercover ups the ante once again for 3D iPhone graphics - something that seems to happen with each new driving game.

But the layers of detail in both the environments and 30 different cars is quite amazing, and will undoubtedly push Need For Speed Undercover into the hands of racing fans on the strength of its dynamic lighting alone.

It's being pegged for release this month (which would make sense, though most European gamers know EA's reputation for leaving us hanging) and will most likely weigh in at full App Store whack. Hit the 'Track It!' button for more news as it speeds into view.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
