WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2008 wrestling its way to DS and PSP
New features, more depth, annual enhancements and better graphics
Another year, and one more chance to satisfy your wrestling needs with another instalment in THQ's popular SmackDown vs. RAW franchise. Starting to prove more regular than an All-Bran lover, the series nevertheless promises new additions over previously passed iterations.
First in line is the Superstar Fighting Styles, offering players the chance to grapple with one of eight unique combat methods, each with a particular strategy and attributes.
Then there's a brand new Struggle Submission System that apparently gives intuitive control over the WWE stars by making use of the analogue inputs, so that the amount of pressure applied to opponents can now be controlled.
Completing the trio of major additions is the inclusion of a significant Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) presence, including a variety of Superstars, weapons and arenas.
The rest of the improvements shouldn't be discounted, however, given that most have been requested by fans. As such, expect new rosters, more environmental hotspots, a combined Season and General Manager mode experience, improved out-of-ring action, enhanced online community support and more.
The game is due for both Sony's and Nintendo's handhelds, with the latter benefiting from a tailored gameplay experience, including touchscreen control over Superstars, situation-based fighting with unique holds, and 'a full year of nonstop action in WWE Season Mode'.
Which is particularly handy as it should take you right up to the release of the 2009 instalment.
