While the mobile phone's screen will never rival a 48" plasma, there's no reason why it shouldn't compete on sound. A phone is primarily a device for listening, after all.

Hence mobile publisher Player X could be on to a winner with its just-signed Beat The Intro game.

This music quiz features polyphonic clips and lyrics that cover more than half a century of popular music. Chin-stroking players have to identify the song and the artist, followed by three trivia questions relating to the artist, track or year of release.

And in a nod to the dubious musical tastes of our continental cousins, the game has also been localised into French, Italian, German and Spanish versions, with presumably Europop-tailored tracks for each country.

"We're also looking forward to releasing several versions of the game, ranging from heavy metal to classical to soul," said Tony Pearce, Player X CEO. So get lobbying for that jungle or skiffle version now! Beat The Intro goes live with all major UK and European operators at the end of April.
