First screenshots have emerged of Nintendo's next DS Advance Wars outing, and show the game has ditched the cute art style (possibly for good) and replaced it with a dark, although still comic book look that's far more grown-up.

And the storyline the game follows sounds equally serious, with translations of some of the Japanese text in the screenshots released indicating it takes place in a world ravaged by natural disasters. Heat, earthquakes and meteor strikes have wiped out 90 per cent of the earth's population.

Luckily for us, the remaining 10 per cent are still happy to engage in some tank-on-tank combat.

The game, which is considered to be a sequel of sorts to Advance Wars: Dual Strike on Nintendo's handheld, is also now going by a new name, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. Early speculation points at the game using new COs, and several of the units have been seen in a video, including a new motorbike unit and Defender Cannon.

The US release date is currently set for January 21st 2008, with no confirmation of the European release yet. Obviously we'll be in touch the moment we hear anything.
