Forthcoming mobile game A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is about a monster building snowmen
A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is a game being made for Christmas. Except, well, it's a little late for that now.
Luckily, it's about being a monster and building snowmen, and that can be enjoyed any time of year. That much I found out when having a brief play of it.
Providing the soundscapes is Ryan Roth, who has provided sound for Starseed Pilgrim, Electronic Super Joy, and many more indie hits.
The preview version that I was able to play threw you straight into the maze of snowy gardens that makes up A Good Snowman's journey of puzzles.
You quickly learn that the aim of each garden is to make a snowman out of three snowballs of different size. You need a large snowball for the bottom, a medium-sized one for the middle, and the smallest size is reserved for the head.
Each garden is arranged into a grid. You can push the snowballs between the squares, provided nothing is blocking your way.
You also need to pay attention to whether snow lies across a square or not, as pushing a snowball across snow causes it to get bigger. There's an undo and reset function in case you make a mistake.
Once you've pushed the snowballs into the right sizes and stacked them in the right order, you'll create a snowman and complete that garden. More gardens will then unlock, usually two at a time, giving you a chance to try a different puzzle if you get stuck on one.
A Good Snowman stands out for its nuances as much as its puzzle design. The sound of the snow creaking underfoot. The amusing animations from the main character as it bustles about.
It's easy to become absorbed in this charming world. I can't help but think that there might be more to the story than a monster creating snowmen, too. We'll have to wait and see.A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is coming to PC first, but should also arrive on mobile soon after its initial launch. You can find out more information on its website.
