It's already been a massive year for iOS gaming, with big-name titles like Warhammer Quest, Joe Danger, and Cut the Rope: Time Travel touching down on the App Store at an ever-increasing rate.

And this year's about to get even more, well, massive for iOS gaming, for XCOM: Enemy Unknown will go live on Apple's digital emporium at midnight this evening.

Firaxis and 2K have reworked their take on the console classic from the ground up for touchscreen devices.

And while XCOM: Enemy Unknown for iOS may lack a little of the visual spark of its older home console brother, it's still a stunning-looking game.

So stunning, in fact, that you will only be able to play it on an iPad 2, third-gen iPad, iPad with Retina display (iPad 4), iPad mini, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and fifth-gen iPod touch.

But when you're getting console-quality turn-based gameplay in the palm of your hand, you can't really complain.

You'll need strategy and tactical nous if you want to overcome the alien invasion that's threatening earth in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. You'll also need to level-up your squad of elite troopers and discover new and exotic weaponry.

The console version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown won a whole raft of awards at the end of last year. The iOS edition can be yours from midnight for £13.99 / $19.99.
