Verizon charts suggest big boys dominating non-iPhone markets

Namco, EA and Capcom top of Verizon's pops

Verizon charts suggest big boys dominating non-iPhone markets

It's a testament to iPhone that it's not at all surprising to see the likes of Angry Birds and Doodle Jump striding, as ever, towards the top of the charts in the UK today.

While neither could exactly be described as releases from major players, both have become big fish in their own, admittedly massive, pond.

Non-iPhone charts aren't quite as liberally sprinkled with hits from smaller, independent outfits, however.

Final Fantasy first

Indeed, mocoNews reports that titles from the likes of Namco, EA, and Capcom are the big releases in Verizon's six monthly countdown in the US.

Sitting at the top is Final Fantasy, published by Namco, while The Sims 3: World Adventures and Jewel Quest III from EA take up the second and third spots.

Indeed, Gameloft is the only mobile based publisher taking it to the big boys, with Iron Man 2 and The Oregon Trail coming in at #6 and #7 respectively, behind Where's Waldo by Capcom at #5.

Operator for all?

Verizon's countdown is a fair reflection of the state of play outside of iPhone in the US, given the network – with around 105 million subscribers on board - is the largest operator not to carry the handset across the Atlantic.

The carrier's charts certainly help paint a picture of just why independent developers have been so enriched by the App Store since its debut almost two years ago - although a six monthly chart is unlikely to reflect the hits that come and go in quick time.

Android also offers some balance outside of iPhone, however, with releases from mobile-based studios regularly populating Android Market's best-selling lists.
