The Escapists games have achieved a decent bit of success over the years, through a smart combination of delightful pixel-art graphics and tough, considered gameplay focused around doing your own Shawshank and getting the hell out of prison.

The first game in the series landed on mobile in 2017, and now it's the turn of The Escapists 2 to come to smaller screens. It's expected to land under the name The Escapists 2: Pocket Breakout on January 31st simultaneously on Android and iOS for $6.99/£6.99.

As in the first title, you'll need to stick to prison rules, turning up for roll call and making sure you've not got any contraband on you when it's your turn for a random search. But all the while, you'll have to plan your escape, get your tools in place, and maybe even rough up some guards when you finally make a break for sweet, sweet freedom.

The Escapists 2 kicks it up a notch with multi-levelled prisons and harder challenges, but this time you can call in up to three friends in local multiplayer to help out. Many hands make less work, as the saying probably goes.

I've never really got into The Escapists before now - they're a little too slow-paced for my liking. But the level of simulation on offer is pretty impressive, and it does look rather lovely to boot. Maybe its second entry will finally persuade me to change my mind.

Either way, we'll be sure to have our final thoughts on it when The Escapists 2: Pocket Breakout lands on January 31st. You can pre-order it right now on the App Store for £6.99/$6.99, or pre-register on Google Play and pay that price when the time comes. In the meantime, keep your toothbrush sharpened and your poster of Rita Hayworth on your wall.
