The first details of the newly announced Super Monkey Ball 3D [name not finalised] for the 3DS emerged today from Sega HQ, along with the tasty hint that Sonic The Hedgehog will also be making an appearance on the new Nintendo handheld.

Super Monkey Ball 3D is planned as a 3DS launch title and uses the accelerometer inside the 3DS to gauge how far you’re tilting the world, much in the same way as the iPhone and iPad versions worked.

Along with the standard mode, which sees you tilt a little monkey trapped in what looks like a Hamster ball towards the exit, SMB3D also comes with two multiplayer modes, Monkey Race and Monkey Flight.

Sega has confirmed that it will be bringing a further five games to the console over the next year and half, including a Sonic title.

The company hasn’t revealed any more details, but it's likely to be either a revamped version of the upcoming Sonic 4 or a remake of one of 3D Sonic games.

Hopefully the former.
