It’s a game Jim!

Star Trek boldly goes where it’s not gone before - DS and PSP

It’s a game Jim!

Like rival space opera Star Wars, the quality of games set in the Star Trek universe has swung widely from the great (ST: Bridge Commander) to down right embarrassing (ST: Shattered Universe). And without the support of new TV shows or films, plus various complex financial wrangling resulting from previous the attempts, all but the most fervent Trekkies had given up on the hope of future gaming goodness.

But the news from the holodeck is promising; as part of an attempted resurrection of the brand - with online and PC games on the way - there will also be a dedicated DS and PSP game. Labelled Star Trek: Tactical Assault, it takes you back in time to the original Star Trek series. But it won’t be all about exploring new planets and finding new civilisations. Real-time spaceship combat will be the order of the day, Captain.

Both Federation and Klingon campaigns will be available, with plenty of authentic Star Trek races, ships, and weaponry on offer. Also promised is head-to-head wireless multiplayer combat.

Currently gearing up for warp factor eight with developer Quicksilver Software, Star Trek: Tactical Assault should be beaming down in the US during September. A European publisher or release date is yet to be confirmed.
