There’s been considerable internet outrage (no, really) ever since it emerged that Sony’s forthcoming App Store-like Minis service would not allow for App Store-like software updates or multiplayer features. To many, this seemed to ensure that the service would be hamstrung from day one.

Now it emerges that software updates will indeed be allowed (though to what extent we’re unsure) and multiplayer is a very real possibility following the first phase of Minis software.

Speaking with Destructoid, Sony’s Director of PlayStation Network Operations and Strategic Planning (gasp) Eric Lempel insisted that “you can patch Minis,” although this doesn’t necessarily confirm the ability to update games with additional content.

Lempel also added that “we won't have multiplayer functions in the beginning," explaining that, "[b]asically, to get these developers on board, and to make it easier to test and get it through the pipeline, we won't be allowing that functionality for the first stage of Minis."

He added that this feature would be “something we will consider in the future.”

In other words, don’t write Minis off just yet.
