A Pokémon RPG on iOS and Android could be 'in the realms of possibility'

Junichi Masuda, director of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, has said that a Pokémon RPG for iOS and Android could be "in the realms of possibility."

It came up during an interview with The Telegraph in which Masuda sat with designer Shigeru Ohmori for questioning about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

When asked if Pokémon could be licensed for iOS and Android, Matsuda said, "I've got a bit of a resistance from those [safety and security] kind of points of view."

"If it were to reach a stage where I would be happy to hand my iPhone to a five year-old and know that, actually, that device and everything about it is safe and secure and I can trust the device in the hands of a five year-old, then it would become in the realms of possibility,” Masuda said.

In other words, at least one of the reasons that Pokémon and other Nintendo-owned franchises aren't on mobile is due to the insecurity of the platform.

Masuda compared the security of mobile with that of the 3DS to explain why Pokémon games are released on to that platform without worry.

"With wireless functionality you can communicate with people you don't know in a safe and secure way over the internet, you can trade and battle with people you've never met before, but again it's safe and secure. There's no issues there," said Masuda.

While an official Pokémon RPG might be far from coming to iOS and Android, we at least know that it's not an impossibility.

And let's not forget that Pokémon Trading Card Game Online was recently released on iOS to much success. Hopefully that's given Nintendo at least a little bit of reassurance.
