The launch of Pokémon Champions on mobile last month was a pretty exciting one for fans, offering a new PvP take on everyone's favourite creature collector. But the folks behind Champions also came up with an interesting new way to highlight the release: a Champion of Champions Tournament!
In short, it brought together 'champions' of different strange sports to play Pokémon Champions, before crowning the so-called 'Champion of Champions'. And now we know exactly who took home the gold, none other than UK nettle-eating champion Mike Hobbs! And he wasn't the only bizarre competitor in this equally strange contest.
We are the champions
Yes, amongst the competitors who were champions of their respective fields, we also had: Zachary 'Ichabod Fame' Knowles (air guitar), Denis Kwan Hong-Wang (doing nothing) and Nicola Matarazzo (pizza acrobatics)! Truly, the Olympics ain't got nothing on this.But jokes aside, this competition certainly seems to have had the intended effect. Pokémon Champions is a bit of a niche entry in the series for fans, ditching many of the elements that may seem key to the series, but for those looking for pure action and Pokémon battles without any of the roleplaying or side-activities, it seems to be quite fun.
So highlighting the mobile launch with such a wacky, out-there competition isn't a bad idea. Whether that manages to give Pokémon Champions the boost it needs to really make its mark on mobile, however, is something we'll just have to wait and see about.
